Day 33: Waterfall Hike

8th August:

Most amazing banana pancakes with honey for breakfast.

At 9am I started the 5 or 6 hour Trek to Manchewe Waterfall, the biggest waterfall in Malawi!
I went with a Kiwi girl called Jade, a Canadian couple called Morgan and Bryhan and our lovely 22 year old guide called Kennedy who knew EVERYTHING!

It took us under an hour to walk to the top of the waterfall where we could sit literally on the edge and look over the top- scary!!

Our next stop was a viewpoint, called Lover's Rock, from which you could see the 300m waterfall.

Then we started trekking through the jungle to the cave where people used to hide from the slave traders many many years ago.

Afterwards we started to make our way down to the bottom, which took a couple hours but felt much more. The hike turned out to be a lot tougher than I thought it was going to be.

A big proportion of the trek was what Kennedy called a 'jungle scramble', consisting of following unrecognisable paths, climbing over boulders, through tree branches and under tunnels. I spent a lot of the time sliding down rocks on my bum and then abseiling up using vines. The Canadian couple- Morgan and Bryhan are planning to climb Kilimanjaro in about a month and I'd say I was probably quite a bit fitter than them, which is looking promising for my Mt Mulanje plans later this month! On the way down we saw two snake eagles which was really cool! We also saw a baby scorpion and a long single file chain of caterpillars looking for food.
We eventually got to the bottom & ate our packed lunches. Afterwards we then hiked all the way to the top again (the same 2 hour route!!) and had an incredibly rewarding and refreshing swim in a little pool a few hundred metres above the waterfall.

We also managed to rinse our sweat-dripping tops... gross! My socks are still orange from the sandy dusty muddy terrain- might have to bin those when I get back!

Decided to stay another night because there was veggie spag bol on the menu (mushroom farm is a vegetarian place), because we got back at 3pm, meaning I had three hours to get to Mzuzu before it got dark, which was pushing it for time (especially "Malawi time"!) and lastly because there was a yoga class tomorrow morning that I wanted to do! So I stayed!

Hot shower :)

Had rather a big headache before dinner and realised its because ever since I cracked me precious treasured water bottle that holds a special place in my heart (RIP!) I don't drink enough water. Especially after coming up to mushroom farm, but it tastes so weird up here cause it's from a natural spring up in the mountains and I'm used to the chlorine tasting water down by the lake.
After dinner I tried one of their drinks called Brown Sugar, which is Hot Chocolate and Amarulo... mmmm... Especially good cause it's freezing up here at night!

This little guy stayed there for a good few minutes!
